Not Brain Surgery: A Crayon Metaphor

What’s a Mental Exercise?  Here is my metaphor.  We use 3 basic elements of EFT to integrate the 3 parts of the brain.

Warning:   The image and explanation provided are not scientifically accurate, so please, if you are a medical person, give me some leeway. I promise not to cut into anyone’s brain using my brain map (or any other, for that matter  :)  ).

The top blue part is the Executive Brain (for speech logic higher thinking skills) . It controls our thinking, planning, creating.  It’s the part that defines our humanity.

 We can feel and express appreciation, gratitude and joy. We accept that life “is what it is”, and enjoy the warmth of the sunshine. “I deeply and completely accept myself,” with the Executive Brain.

 The middle green part is the Emotional Brain, which controls how react to the stuff in our lives. It allows us to feel fear, envy, anxiety, and loneliness. It also gives us those butterflies in the stomach, or the tightness in the chest.

For instance, you see an explosion, you feel fear, and your get a tight sensation in your chest. That’s the Emotional Brain at work.

 And the lowest red part is the non-verbal Reptilian Brain (survival instinct), which controls our primal responses. It’s an uncomplicated binary system: black or white, toward or away, take action or be still.

 For example, during that explosion, and your heart stops for just a moment, then you run. That’s the flight response of the Reptilian Brain.

 

To continue with the metaphor, we get the 3 parts of our brains to  ”talk” to each other, using the 3 Basic Elements of EFT.

Three Basic Elements of EFT

1.  Think about the Global Good Stuff.

“I love it when the sun shines.” “I appreciate all that you do.” The global good stuff also includes getting insights, feeling gratitude, learning, imagining, planning; all the domain of the Executive Brain.

2.  Think about the Specific Bad Stuff .

“the look in his eyes”; “the tone of her voice”; “The butterflies in my stomach.” That’s controlled by the Emotional Brain.

 3.  Tap on specific points of the body.

That relates to the binary, primal, non-verbal Reptilian Brain.

 

Summary:

  1. Think about Expansive Good Stuff >- the Executive Brain
  2. Think about Specific Bad Stuff >- the Emotional Brain
  3. Tap on the body>- the Reptilian Brain
